Renewed SUP legislation: what will change?
The SUP legislation
From January 1, 2024, a new SUP legislation will start in the Netherlands. Disposable packaging must make way for recycling. We have listed the most important measures to prevent plastic waste.
Ban on plastic straws
Plastic straws are one of the most common SUPs and contribute to plastic pollution. As of 2024, all plastic straws will be banned. This forces us to look for alternatives, such as reusable straws made from materials like stainless steel or bamboo.
Ban on plastic cutlery and stirrers
Also, plastic cutlery and stirrers will no longer be allowed starting in 2024. This means that offices, hotels, restaurants and other catering establishments must switch to sustainable alternatives, such as compostable cutlery or reusable cutlery.
Limiting plastic packaging
The legislation will limit the amount of plastic packaging in circulation. This includes food and beverage packaging in particular. Producers will be encouraged to use alternative and sustainable materials, such as cardboard or biodegradable plastics.
Government provides information on reusable products
In addition to limiting SUPs, this legislation also seeks to promote the use of reusable products. Consumers should be encouraged to use their own reusable water bottles, coffee cups and shopping bags.
What does this mean to you?
In the hospitality industry, in the office and at events, single-use is being banned. So no more plastic bottles and no more plastic packaging. The goal is for recycling to become the norm and for us all to take a step toward a more sustainable life. That means for you to look for a sustainable alternative.
